As a technician I am asked constantly how I speed up my computer. Well there is no one answer to this question. I would suggest running a couple of things to ensure your current hardware is running the best it can. All of which you already have or can do so for free.
Step # 1 – Hard Drive:
The first thing I would suggest is a two step process to answer the question. First you need to run a scandisk. This accomplishes a couple of things. It will verify the hard drive index for files and folder is correct and it will check the hard drive for any bad sectors. Moving any files off of those sectors if detected.
The second portion of this step is to run defrag. Defrag will move all of your files to a continuous space ensure faster read times and as such increasing the speed by which it can process them. It will also clear any unused space as an added measure to help prevent possible corruption.
Step # 2 – Registry:
After you have accomplished the above another step you will want to do in order to resolve your question of how do I speed up my computer is to run a registry cleaner. A registry cleaner will ensure that all pointers for your system are correct and not pointing at deleted files. I would highly recommend running this after you uninstall something. As an important part of this you will want to run a registry backup also. Your program should be able to accomplish.
Step # 3 – Malware
Detection:
No last but not least you will want to make sure your antivirus and malware detection is working. So run a couple of manual scans through each. This will not only help to ensure you do not have any but will also check to ensure that you do not have any sitting in waiting on your system already. You programs should have already found them before they were installed but sometimes things slip through the cracks.
Not one of these by themselves will resolve any performance issues. If it does so it will be minimal. All together though they can fix pretty much most basic speed problems. Of them all I would say the registry cleaner is the most important because it can also accomplish a backup and will resolve any pointer issues for you.
As you can tell in order to answer your how do I speed up my computer question I answered with a couple of things. Each computer is different although these basic steps should help any system regardless. As a part of this I would also highly recommend keeping all of your software up to date. Use the programs update software or Windows Update in the case of drivers for your hardware. This will also help to speed up your system as they tend to fix known issue with those update.
